I am worried about my worms... they don't seem to be eating as much as I had expected. It could just be that they are new and still adapting, I don't know. I have these little bugs in there now and the food scraps in there are going moldy... can anyone provide some tips and help on this? Could they be too cold?

My experience from raising worms to feed my aquarium is that worms don't really like soil temperatures <10 degrees or much higher than 30 degrees. It's easier to keep them happy in summer, since you can just keep the worm farm damp and in the shade. But keeping them warm in Melbourne winter can be a challenge. Some people suggest insulating the farm with some old carpet or rugs, but I think it's just easier to move them into the garage.
I did read somewhere about putting carpet or something around them to keep them warm - I might have to do this and maybe move them to near my vegies (more sunlight) as I don't have a garage or anywhere else to put them :(
A few more thoughts
- How many worms did you start with? Most kits start with ~1000, which I think a lot of kits say is the bare minimum to start with. With such a large farm, it'll take a while before they get established - maybe a couple of months.
- To avoid the mould and bugs, you need to be careful not too overfeed them. It takes a while to figure out exactly what the optimal amount to feed them, especially while the population is still growing. Once it stabilises it's easier.
- Some people reckon breadcrumbs will help them to grow fatter faster because they're small and easily digested.
I read somewhere about the maths. I THINK it's like this, but I'm not 100% sure.
- They eat about half of their body weight a week
- They double in population (weight) every 2 months
- Feed them once a week, just a bit more than they will eat in that week
I started with the 1000 worm kit - I reckon you would be right though, need to just give them a little bit each week until they grow more and populate more etc and the weather gets warmer!
